“Fool’s Gold”

I started listening to the EP promo for Built to Spill’s new When the Wind Forgets Your Name, which includes “Spiderweb,” “Fool’s Gold,” “Understood,” and “Gonna Lose,” on the train home. Later, when I got there and continued listening, I cried and cried—at the blue notes on “Fool’s Gold,” at the outro of “Gonna Lose,” the music like fresh, clear water to me. Doug Martsch, as quoted by Frere-Jones, claims his guitar solos are little more than riffs, thrown together; for those who know and love this lineage, the solo on “Fool’s Gold,” plus the vocal section that precedes it (fool’s gold made me rich for a little while, rich for a little while, rich for a little while / fool’s gold made me rich for a little while…), show the claims to be modest ones.
